Awkward Moment Chris Cuomo Announces Brother's Historic Defeat on Live TV
Chris Cuomo's Live Analysis of His Brother's Defeat in New York City Mayoral Race
Chris Cuomo found himself in an unexpected position on live television, where he was forced to analyze his brother's historic loss in the New York City mayoral race. The election results were announced just moments before the broadcast, and Cuomo, who co-anchors NewsNation’s coverage, had to address the outcome in real-time.
Democrat Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old candidate, secured a decisive victory in the nation’s largest city, receiving 50.4 percent of the vote. Former Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primaries, trailed with 42 percent, while Republican Curtis Sliwa garnered only eight percent of the votes.
As the news broke, Chris Cuomo expressed his personal feelings about his brother’s defeat. “Of course I wanted my brother to win; I believe in my brother, I believe he is a tremendous operator within government,” he said. However, he also acknowledged that “Democrats win in New York City” and that his brother was not what the party needed at this time.
Cuomo provided a concise one-line analysis of his brother’s loss: “The Democrat was gonna win in New York City.” He further elaborated on the political shift, stating that the type of Democrat the city wants is a reaction to the MAGA movement. “These are a big basket of votes. If this percentage structure stays the same, it answers the question of the mandate.”
He predicted that this trend would continue in the upcoming midterms across the country. Meanwhile, Democrats celebrated a successful night in Virginia, where they won the governor, attorney general, and lieutenant governor races.
Andrew Cuomo graciously conceded defeat at his election night watch party, even as some supporters attempted to boo Mamdani. “No, no,” he said, “that is not right. That is not us.” He highlighted the significance of the 42 percent of voters who supported him, noting that it was the highest percentage in modern history for an independent candidate.
Mamdani has faced criticism for his ambitious policies, including making city buses free, introducing rent freezes, providing free childcare, and increasing the minimum wage. These plans would be funded through higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations. However, Cuomo argued that the city should focus on an economy driven by jobs, opportunity, and entrepreneurship. He emphasized the importance of law and order, the role of the NYPD, and the value of diversity and tolerance.
His comments were seen as a subtle critique of Mamdani’s politics, especially given the latter’s vocal support for Palestine during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Mamdani’s rise from an unknown assembly member to mayor-elect has surprised many, raising concerns about the impact of his socialist policies on the city’s future.
In a social media video celebrating his victory, Mamdani showed a subway door opening at the “City Hall” station. “Thank you to the next generation of New Yorkers who refused to accept that the promise of a better future was a relic of the past,” he said. “We are breathing in the air of a city that has been reborn.”
President Donald Trump has criticized Mamdani, calling him a “communist” and threatening to cut federal funding to the city if he won. “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump stated. He claimed that a New York under Mamdani would be a “complete and total economic and social disaster.”
Trump had previously endorsed Andrew Cuomo, hoping to sway voters away from Mamdani. Despite their feud during his first term, he praised Cuomo’s “record of success.” On Tuesday night, the president suggested that the reason his candidates lost was because the Trump name was not on the ballot and blamed the ongoing government shutdown.
