A Hero Emerges at Mashujaa Day Celebrations

Mashujaa Day Celebrations in Kitui County
The long-awaited Mashujaa Day celebrations finally took place on Monday at the Ithookwe stadium in Kitui county. This annual event honors Kenya’s heroes and heroines, paying tribute to those who sacrificed for the country’s freedom, progress, and unity. The day is observed every year on October 20, celebrating the gallant men and women who shaped the nation's liberation struggle and recognizing modern-day champions of nation-building.
This year, Kitui county had the honor of hosting the national celebrations, following Kenya’s tradition of rotating national events across counties to promote unity, inclusivity, and national pride. President William Ruto presided over the ceremony at the Ithookwe stadium, marking a significant moment in the country's cultural calendar.
The Permanent Presidential Music Commission (PPMC) was responsible for curating and executing the official entertainment program. After months of regional auditions, rehearsals, and production planning across Kitui, the PPMC delivered a 28-minute musical spectacle that featured artists from Machakos and Makueni counties. This performance highlighted the authentic cultural heartbeat of the lower Eastern Region.
In honor of the late Rt Hon Raila Odinga, a quick adjustment was made to include poetry, dance, and song in reverence to his legacy. The program followed a traditional schedule: a morning session at Ithookwe Stadium, a main national ceremony featuring the presidential segment at the same venue, and an afternoon state luncheon at the New Kitui Mini State Lodge.
The showcase blended heritage, spirituality, and contemporary creativity, offering a rich cultural experience for attendees. Notable performances included:
- Benga Legends: Bosco Mulwa, Mahukum, Marash Ma Mkorea, Kakongo Sisters, and Franco Kisassy Boys Band.
- New Generation Benga: Musomesa Mwenee, Jay Lava Beibe, Sauti Isu, Hon Muthengi Ndagara, and Kasupuu Kamutei, performing “Kenya Twi Mbee.”
- Gospel Powerhouses: A collaboration of Justus Myello, Winnie Mutanu, Ann Kathy, Stephen Kasolo, Priscilla Nina, Stellar Mengele, and Dr Mbuvi Aamp with the song “Ndeke Ya Muthanga.”
- Cultural Masterpieces: Itheke and Mukanda traditional dance ensembles, and a choral feature “Nguvu Ya Mashujaa” by the Kitui Teachers Training College Choir.
Two exclusive tribute singles were performed in honor of Rt Hon Raila Odinga:
- “Raila Hoyee” by Sammy Dee and The Cluster Dancers.
- A moving country rendition of Harry Belafonte’s “Jamaica Farewell” by Pharry K.
Dr Donald Otoyo, director of PPMC, stated after the shows, “Today, we are proud to affirm that culture remains the heartbeat of our national identity.” The crowd was deeply moved when the performers recreated Raila through dance and poetry, evoking powerful emotions.
In the end, the music soothed aching souls as new artistes were born, a mandate that PPMC curates with precision. The event not only celebrated the past but also highlighted the future of Kenyan music and culture.
